TUMPAS Epilepsy Indonesia is a collaborative research initiative funded by the British Council and Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education – Directorate of Research and Community Service (LPDP-DPPM) through the International Science Partnership Fund (ISPF). This project unites a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, pharmaceutical scientists, and biomedical researchers across the UK and Indonesia to address one of the most critical challenges in neurological health: drug-resistant epilepsy.
The Urgent Need for Innovation in Epilepsy Treatment
Indonesia faces a significant burden of epilepsy, with 1–2 million affected individuals and nearly 30% showing resistance to available antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). Surgical options, while effective, are underused due to social and cultural barriers. Our project seeks non-invasive, accessible, and effective solutions by enhancing drug delivery to the brain — offering hope for better seizure control and quality of life.
Project Objectives
Pre-Clinical Models
Designing in vitro and in vivo testing models tailored to Indonesia’s specific conditions.
Reformulations
Optimizing existing antiepileptic drugs for painless and effective brain delivery.
PK/PD Profling
Assessing the safety and efficacy of reformulated antiepileptic drugs using the most suitable models.
